Hints and Tips for Organising your Utility Room
21st Mar 2018
As spring is upon us and we are able to start drying clothes outdoors, now is a good time to organise your utility or laundry room. Alongside the kitchen, this is where all the household organisation goes on. We all know that uniforms not being ready or that perfect outfit not being clean for your meeting or event, can throw a household into panic and chaos. An organised utility room helps the smooth running of the rest of the home.
To start with, consider the main purpose of your utility room. Is it mainly for doing laundry, is it a hub of home cleaning, or do you use it to store home and garden equipment and cleaning products? Perhaps it also doubles up as your boot room? Compartmentalise the different areas with home shelving and home storage solutions and you will achieve a functional and ultimately time-saving space.
As with all rooms, the first thing you need to achieve a clutter-free space is shelving. This very much depends on the size room you have to work with. Whether you go for Freestanding Shelving or Adjustable Wall Shelving. Open shelving is the best option for utility organisation, as you need to be able to see everything and access it easily. Chrome Wire Shelving Units work very well in a utility or laundry, as they are both stylish and exposed. There are plenty of options to choose from, including clear Storage Boxes and Clothes Rails, making it really easy to hang clothes straight from the washing machine or dryer to remain as flat and crease-free as possible. The Storage Boxes can safely store liquids and chemicals underneath or other laundry accessories. With the shelves being easily adaptable and height changing when necessary for storing towels, bedding and linens, and other foldable items waiting to be ironed.
You can also use separate freestanding Clothes Rails, such as a 3ft Clothes Rail, which is an ideal reduced-sized space-saver for a utility room and comes in a range of colours. Alternatively, if you are short on floor space, you could use a Suspended Hanging Rail which can be simply attached to the ceiling or a Wall Mounted Hanging Rail. Use these with classic or more modern styles of Clothes Hangers to drape clothes and allow the creases to drop out to minimise ironing – you can choose fun colour tones or timeless wood finishes to match the mood scheme of the room. This is also a great place to hang any clothes that need smartening up. Keep a few Lint Rollers to hand in an easy to access storage box to remove any fluff or pet hair from clothes. Hanging an ironing board to the wall by attaching hooks is a good way to save space and keep it out of the way. If you really want to have great looking, crease-free clothes in an instant, consider getting a clothes steamer. These work on all fabrics, from everyday cottons and linens to delicate silks and satins.
Laundry baskets are an essential for this room. Try more than one laundry basket to save you time by separating your dirty washing into lights and darks as you go along.
And finally, if you also use your utility as a boot room, it’s essential to have a shoe rack to keep footwear neatly tidied away. The last thing you want is muddy shoes mucking up your clean and organised laundry room.
Now, if you can just persuade the rest of the family to adhere to your neatly organised utility room and keep everything in it’s place then you’ll be set!
