6 Quirky Ways with Wall Shelving

6 Quirky Ways with Wall Shelving

Back in the day, running out of storage space meant buying more shelves, throwing them up and not giving more than a passing thought to how they fit in with the rest of the décor. More and more though, storage is something we plan rather than add in as an afterthought and that means we’re looking at the humble old wall shelf through new eyes! Shelves are already incredibly functional, yet there are loads of ways of making wall shelving work harder (and look better) in every room of your home.

1) In the living room. Wall shelving and the living room go together like scones and clotted cream. But even with classic pairtings, you can still mix things up. Think about matching your wall to your shelves. The obvious choice is white shelves with white walls but how about Oak Adjustable Shelving on a panelled oak wall?  This look works really well in an alcove where you can (securely!) fix oak veneer panels to the wall and your oak shelving to the veneer. The Lighting Superstore has some cool under shelf lighting to show off your hard work.

2) In the hallway. OK, so it probably doesn’t count as a whole room, but the hallway is still a great place to be creative with shelving- even if the space isn’t huge! Try installing two sets of Chrome/Glass Adjustable Shelving into a corner so that the glass from each unit meets. This could be your new spot for your keys and a cracked jug of autumn hued flowers.

3) In a child’s room. For a super organised children’s room, shelving is a must. It keeps floors clear and gives more room for kids to play. Go for something durable like our hard wearing, long lasting White Adjustable Steel Shelves. Grouping 3 sets of shelves together is really effective but instead of putting them all at the same level, fix the middle set of shelves so that its top shelf is in line with the second shelf down from the other two sets of shelves- this just adds a more playful feel to the shelves.

4) In the den. An ancient wing-backed chair in a tartan print, a few good books and a little table has all the makings of a great den or snug. Add in wall shelving in the traditional way, or use a small shelving set in glass, oak or white at table level within easy reach of your armchair. As all our shelves are adjustable, fit one set of brackets and one shelf and you’ll have an instant mini table-shelf. Bonus- your cup of coffee will never be more than an arm’s distance away!

5) In the office. At the heart of every organised office is a shelf-or two! Why be half hearted about it though and end up adding shelves continually. Start off big with a whole wall of shelves. Install the White Adjustable Shelving with 4 shelves from ceiling to floor and group sets of these shelves next to each other to create a bookcase feel. You could even put long strips of painted MDF vertically between the sets of shelves to really make that bookcase stand out.

6) In the kitchen. The trend in kitchens now is for having your pieces out on display, like flour and chocolate chips decanted into wire lock glass jars, and metallic mugs arranged in neat rows. Storing ingredients and kitchenware like this not only looks good, but encourages us to be neater. Switching high kitchen cupboards for shelving can save a fortune on base units, but also looks really stylish too. Put Chrome/Oak Adjustable Shelves where high cupboards would usually be for the length of your worktop. We also love the idea of using our shelves to make a mini breakfast bar under a window or in an alcove.

Who’d have thought the shelf could be so versatile?! In homage of all things shelf-like we’ve got some great offers on wall shelving now!
