Create Your Personal At-Home Spa Retreat
15th Nov 2023

Life can be tough, right? Balancing the stresses of work, life and everything in between is hard work. And while we all want to spend time with our loved ones and relax at home after a long day, sometimes we need some peace and quiet to unwind and chill out.
A visit to a spa is the ultimate relaxation treat, with soothing music, ambient lighting, and luxurious treatments to help us de-stress. But let’s face it, realistically we’re not going to be visiting a spa every day. That’s why creating your own “spathroom” (or a spa-style bathroom) at home is the next best thing!
You may be thinking that creating a spa-like environment at home means time, effort and expensive remodels; especially when looking for the latest bathroom inspo brings up floor-to-ceiling marble and vast double sink tops. But don’t worry! With some creativity, DIY skills, and a few select display and storage pieces, you can turn your bathroom into an at-home spa for the ultimate calm and zen retreat.
Clear Your Space

Okay, so this isn’t the most exciting place to start but it is important! We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘a cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind’. When you’re lying back in the tub and surrounded by a growing collection of bottles and washing thrown on the side, it doesn’t exactly evoke that spa ambience.
So, first things first, take a good look at your bathroom products and get rid of anything you don’t need and also, whether you’d benefit from more storage. Once you have the essentials, you can start thinking about how you can make your space feel more luxurious.
A wall-mounted shampoo and conditioner, à la fancy hotel suite, is both a practical and stylish addition. Or maybe add a bath rack or tidy, to hold your book and candles (or a well-deserved tipple).
Use storage, like Chrome Wire Shelving, to create a singular place to store bathroom essentials like towels and toiletries.

Calming Colours
If you’ve visited a spa or any holistic space, you may have noticed that the colour palette tends to lean towards earthy neutrals and light colours, or hues such as blues or greens.
According to a wider study conducted by G.F. Smith, called The World’s Favourite Colour Project, the lighter the colour, the more it is associated with calmness and relaxation. Blues and greens were also associated with these traits (1).
So, the perfect choices then for designing your home spa space! Choose warmer variations of these hues to avoid the space from feeling ‘cold’, then add your own finishing touches with plants, patterned towels or even ornate tiles.
And remember, the above colours are just what most people find calming. If you find that a bright yellow is your calming colour, go for it! This is all about designing your own personal relaxation space.

Warmer wood hues like Oak complement chrome details and are an easy way to add a touch of nature. Shown is our Chrome & Oak Adjustable Shelving.

Use Natural Materials

When decorating a room with the intention of making it bright and inviting, you can actually sometimes end up with a space that appears cold and unwelcoming. Taking inspiration from biophilic design can be useful, with this particular style all about incorporating natural elements to uplift a space. And it’s not just about how it looks; it’s been shown to improve your mood and well-being.
An easy way to infuse this design style into any space is to use natural materials like wood, bamboo, wicker, and stone – they add texture and work well with neutral, earthy colours. Don’t forget about the finish on your fittings and other decorative touches too, which all contribute to your spa-like space.
Wicker or jute baskets are an easy way to add natural materials, as well as extra bathroom storage.
Botanical Bathrooms
To enhance the natural vibe and fully embrace biophilic design, try adding some houseplants! Not only do they look lovely and add some personality and life to a space, they also have therapeutic benefits, such as reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, and improving your mood (2). This is exactly what we’re aiming for!
Choose plants that can handle the humidity, like the ever-popular Peace Lily, Pothos, or Air Plants. And if you’re not a plant pro, that’s okay! You can also add some realistic faux plants instead to capture that natural look.
Plants don’t have to take up a lot of room! Wall Shelving is the perfect place to add smaller varieties or trailing houseplants, choose a natural hue or go for crisp White Shelving or Glass Shelving.

Relax All Senses

Remember when you last relaxed at a spa or had a treatment? The rooms are usually warmly lit, with calming colours and materials all helping to create a chill atmosphere. But it wasn’t just your eyes that were relaxing. The whole space was designed to make you feel zen and calm in every way possible. Natural sounds like waves or birds chirping, along with sweet scents from a selection of luxurious beauty and bath products, aromatherapy, and essential oils.
Immerse yourself in the same way and take the opportunity to arrange a few candles and diffusers and put on some music (although we don’t expect that whale noises will feature in your personal spa playlist).
Little touches will transport you to a fancy hotel or spa, and help you create a relaxing home oasis.
Creating your own spa-like bathroom doesn’t mean a costly new installation. You can achieve a spa-inspired look and feel by focusing on some key features and details. With the above elements in mind, you can create a bathroom, or spathroom, that feels like a luxurious escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
