Shelving in a living room, simple storage projects

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be difficult enough to find free time to do the things we love, never mind keeping up with tasks around the house. In fact, if we compare 2020 to 2023, there has been a significant decrease in the time spent daily on entertainment, socialising and other free time activities (1).

Now, think about how long it takes you to put away or find clothes. Or about how you’re always fighting clutter that seems to build up on the kitchen worktops or how the garage has turned into a dumping ground. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.

Storage doesn’t have to mean big freestanding shelves or bulky pieces of furniture either. Finding creative storage solutions can help you to make the most out of your space, decreasing stress by making it quicker and easier to get the housework done. Meaning more time to put your feet up and relax.

Minimise your work and maximise your free time in the future, by using our clever storage ideas to help declutter and bring order to your home.

Think Up

When you don’t have the floor space to spare, think vertical storage. Your walls can hold much more than just pictures. Free up valuable floor space and add visual interest to a room.

A wall-mounted shelving system is perfect if you have more room to play with on the walls and offer you greater customisation when compared to freestanding shelving. Adjustable shelving is easily installed and you can place the shelving as high or as wide as you like. They’re a great option for garage storage to hold tools and DIY supplies. Adding boxes can help order and sort items.

Whether you’re a casual crafter or a full-on creative, a peg board is a stylish and practical way to store all your craft supplies and tools. Everything you need in reach and easy to find, whilst making precious room on your desk or table.

Or simple mesh or grid panels can be totally customised and made your own. Whether in the home office, garage or bedroom, a grid display provides a unique way to organise tools or items and can be turned into a visually appealing display.

Some of our favourite vertical storage solutions include our Black Grid Mesh Panel (pictured above) and our Hobbi Peg Board (pictured above right).

Roll It Away

Storage doesn’t have to be static. Consider shelves or clothes rails on wheels for the ability to move items around if you’re unable to (or don’t want to) put wall shelving up.

Trolleys or carts are a lightweight and compact option. Quick to build and easy to move. Store smaller kitchen appliances, that you don’t frequently use, out of the way in the utility room. Or free up space in your cupboards and use as a mini-pantry for your dry goods and groceries.

Find Alternative Uses

Sometimes finding a solution to your problem requires some creative thinking. If you can’t find specific storage or shelving that will work for you, look for inspiration in other products. Just because a product has a ‘main’ purpose, doesn’t mean you can’t use it in other areas of the home.

For example, wall hanging rails are most typically used in the bedroom for wardrobes and clothing storage. Why not put them up in your utility room as a place to hang and air laundry. Or if you have a cupboard under the stairs, fit a hanging rail inside the cupboard to put neatly store coats and accessories that you can quickly grab on your way out of the house.

I think we can all agree that you can never have enough storage in the kitchen, so make extra space in your cabinets by adding a hanging a rail to store pots and pans. Striking and practical as well as the perfect addition to kitchens which have open shelving.

Boxes, Boxes, Boxes

Boxes are a fantastic way to store items and organise your home. Tough and reliable, clear storage boxes are great for tidying any shelves which may have accumulated clutter, such as in your garage or utility room. Pair with freestanding or wall shelving to maximise organisation.

Storage boxes are ideal for holding any lesser-used items that you might want to put away in your loft, protecting them from dust and dirt. Or simply, somewhere where you can store the kids toys safely until the next playtime.

Use Small Spaces to Make a Big Impact

Make all those awkward spaces around your home work for you, not against you. Whether you have a gap next to the bathroom sink, a corner in your kitchen or a narrow hallway, using these smaller spaces can make a big difference.

Corner shelves are great in the bathroom to display bath products or store towels.  They also work well as kitchen storage to hold dry goods and groceries.

Shoes racks added to your entrance hallway are a simple way to stop shoes from being left all over the floor without enclosing the space further.

Or in particularly awkward nooks and crannies, refer to our other tip (number 3) about finding unique uses for products to suit your needs.
